About
The grid as a metaphor for consciousness
PROCESS
Barter’s practice explores memory and consciousness, with a particular focus on how memories are felt and re-experienced in the present, rather than understood as fixed narratives of the past.
PROCESS
Used as both a visual and conceptual framework, the grid reflects the fragmented and dynamic nature of memory and serves as a metaphor for consciousness as something consisting of infinite units.
Informed by her background in textile practice, cloth plays an active role in shaping each work, with the interaction between paint and surface contributing to the physical and emotional presence of the paintings.
“My work begins with selecting resonant memories of my own that I’ve captured through photography and drawing.
I abstract them to move them from an internalised experience of memory to something open for the subjectivity of others based on their own experiences and memories’.
I’m interested in how we experience memory as a dynamic system outside our perceived structures of time and space.”
